Nel 1796 – 1798 prese lezioni di pittura da John Thomas Smith e successivamente da George Frost, dei quali condivide il loro amore per i dipinti dei paesaggi e lo incoraggiarono di studiare i lavori di Gainsborough. Nel 1700 entra a far parte della Royal Academy Schools. Da studente inizia a creare copie di paesaggi di altri grandi pittori, come Jacob Van Ruisdael. Constable dalla sua esperienza capì che lo studio della natura era piu importante che lo studio di un qualunque modello artistico.

Baò così la sua pittura su precisi momenti , eventi naturali, e paesaggi direttamente dalla natura. Lo si può definire come il piu grande artista europeo di paesaggi del XIX sec., molto acclamato da Delacroix e Gericault e la sua arte influenzò maestri illustri dell’impressionismo, d’altra parte non ebbe gran fama in inghilterra, il suo unico paese, e ciò perdurò per l’intero arco della sua vita.
